Winter Hair Care

Is it true that cold temperatures can lead to hair damage?

Yes. The combination of cold, dry air outside and indoor heating can strip your hair of its natural lipid moisture, leaving it dry, brittle and more prone to breakage.

Lipids are fatty, waxy compounds that ideally comprise 2-6% of the hair’s total weight and are essential to its health. They help prevent breakage and thinning; keep your hair strong, shiny and elastic; and create a barrier that prevents moisture loss. When hair loses lipids (due to factors like cold dry weather, color or chemical treatments or frequent hot-styling), it becomes dry and brittle and the diameter of the strands shrinks, too. As a result, the cuticle (the outermost layer of the hair) can’t close properly, which leads to color fade and, eventually, split ends.

How does indoor heating impact the moisture levels in hair?

Indoor heat burns out the natural humidity in the air, which leaves your hair parched and thirsty — and thus more susceptible to damage, breakage, frizz, flyaways and static.

What types of hair products are best for winter care?

Botanical oil treatments like my Rejuvenating Oil are key. Most over-the-counter conditioners simply coat the cuticle, giving the appearance of shine and moisture without actually nourishing your hair. But Rejuvenating Oil is made of light, sheer botanical oils that infuse into the hair shaft to restore the lipids that were lost.

The advanced shampoos and conditioners in my Forever Shine and Everyday Beautiful collections. They’re formulated with nano-lipids, in the form of time-released Safflower Oleosomes that restore your hair to the perfect level of lipid moisture. They work brilliantly to protect all hair types while adding bounce and shine.

Velvet Oud Leave-In Conditioning Water: This lightweight leave-in treatment offers instant hydration and detangling benefits that make your hair easier to manage, even in cold dry weather.

Weightless Volumizing Hair Masque: A deep conditioning masque that works even on the finest hair types, delivering the kind of weightless conditioning lipids that only flower oils — which are thin like water — can provide.

It’s very important to think strategically about winter haircare: You don’t want to use just any conditioner. The goal is to soak your hair with oils and masks that will put lipids and life back into it.

How often should we wash our hair in cold weather?

As often as you need. There’s no set schedule. Use your best judgment, but I wouldn’t go longer than 3 days.

What tips can you give for preventing static and frizz in winter?

To prevent static and frizz, keep your hair in good condition with products like the ones I mentioned above. Healthy hair has a negative charge and is less prone to static and frizz. Conversely, damaged hair has a positive charge and is prone to static.

This is also where sophisticated, ultralight conditioners like my Conditioning Water come in handy. They provide weightless moisture to tame frizz and static, giving you a perfect finish every time.

How can we manage split ends and breakage during the colder months?

1. Get trims every 6-12 weeks to remove damaged ends.

2. Pamper your hair with deep conditioning treatments and leave-in conditioners.

3. Minimize your hair’s exposure to heated styling tools — and when you do use them, prep with a heat protectant like Thermal Protection Spray

4. Protect your hair from the elements by wearing a hat or scarf, and use silk or satin-lined headwear to reduce friction.

5. Avoid brushing wet hair; use a wide-toothed comb instead to prevent breakage.

How can regular trims help maintain healthy hair during the cold season?

Regular trims help you get rid of split ends and prevent them from traveling up the hair shaft. That reduces overall breakage to keep your hair looking smooth and healthy.

How can we maintain hydration in our hair when the air is dry?

Use a humidifier to add moisture back into the air (which is also good for your skin), and invest in great products for your hair type. Great products, great tools and great techniques are a slam-dunk — they’re the key to great hair days all year round.

My Weightless Conditioning Water is any easy way to hydrate your hair and you can apply it throughout the day. My Lovin’ Leave-In Conditioner is also great, because it restores some moisture to your hair while feeling clean and lightweight. You could also apply some of my Mega Curl Enhancer. It’s made with lipids to replenish the hair, light up your color and increase your curl or wave formation.

Hair is a fine material, and it has to be treated as such. That’s why I use such fine ingredients.

Does the scalp suffer too? How can we keep it healthy during the winter months?

Yes. Due to cold dry air and indoor heating, the scalp can become dry and itchy.  To keep it healthy, choose shampoos that have a higher percentage of scalp-healthy ingredients, like my Peppermint Avocado Shampoo for deep cleansing. To moisturize a dry scalp, you could go with my Gentle Conditioning Shampoo, made with ultra-nourishing African shea butter, hops and nettle. It's also beneficial to use a botanical oil treatment like Rejuvenating Oil to provide extra hydration.

What steps can we take to prevent hair loss during the colder season?

My Scalp Booster System is a game-changer. It’s clinically proven to improve the look of density, coverage and fullness, so you'll see less shedding in your hairbrush.
